The Keeper of Tomorrow
(Thoughts for a New Year and a New
Life)
by Jim Hammond
Traveler, weary from his journey was surprised after the long up hill climb to find at
the top of the crest a huge wall. There was no way around it or over it. There was but one
door and next to that door what appeared to be a formidable guard. Above the door were two
words, "Your Tomorrow."
"May I enter this Gate," Traveler asked as he approached.
"Yes," the Gate Keeper responded "but I will open it for you, you cannot
open the door yourself."
Traveler was amazed at what he saw--the rippling power in the Keeper's arms as he
opened the door that must have been heavier even than at first it appeared. As it opened
Traveler peered in expectantly. He was disappointed by what he saw. Darkness, Nothing but
utter darkness. "Is there a light to be used?" Traveler asked.
"You must go into the darkness without a light. But what I can give you I will
give you."
"What can you give me?"
"I offer you my hand as the keeper of Tomorrow. If you will permit me I shall be
your guide." The Keeper gazed into Traveler's eyes. Traveler didn't know why he
trusted the Keeper but he did. Maybe it was the look of concern in the Keeper's eyes.
"Is the way dangerous?" Asked Traveler.
"Yes," the Keeper said with obvious concern.
"Why would you travel with me in the darkness?," Traveler asked. "Is it
not dangerous for you also?"
"There will be danger and difficulty but I know the way. I have been through your
dark Tomorrow before. Go into the darkness, and put your hand into mine. It shall be to
you safer than the light and better than the known."
"Is there another way?" Traveler asks.
"You can go on your own," says the Guard, "but nobody has made it
through the darkness without a guide..." the Guard's voice broke he wiped moisture
from his cheek and beard, "...they are lost." He paused and regained his
composure. "May I guide you through?"
Traveler looked again through the gate, then to the Keeper. It was the Keeper's eyes
not the darkness that convinced Traveler to take the Keeper's hand. They turned and
entered dark Tomorrow together.
